St. John’s Preparatory High School Mourns the Passing of Lou Carnesecca (1925–2024)
St. John’s Prep mourns the loss of Lou Carnesecca, who passed away on November 30th at 99. A legendary coach, leader, and mentor, Mr. Carnesecca’s legacy is marked by his passion for the game, respect for others, and deep faith in God. He was a true supporter of St. John’s
Prep, a loyal friend and a gracious presence at many of our events.
Born in New York City, Mr. Carnesecca graduated from St. Ann’s Academy in 1943 and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Afterward, he attended St. John’s University, excelling in basketball and baseball. He began his coaching career at St. Ann’s, leading teams to multiple city championships before transitioning to St. John’s, where he became a basketball icon.
As head coach of St. John’s (1965–70, 1973–92), Mr. Carnesecca achieved 526 wins, a Final Four appearance in 1985, and postseason berths every year of his tenure. His contributions extended internationally through clinics and tours. Briefly coaching the New York Nets, he returned to St. John’s, earning accolades including National Coach of the Year (1983, 1985) and Big East Coach of the Year (1983, 1985, 1986). In 2004, St. John’s honored him by renaming its Alumni Hall to Carnesecca Arena.
Our deepest condolences to his family and we are truly grateful for his support of St. John’s Prep!
Mr. Carnesecca leaves behind an indelible legacy of leadership, faith, and inspiration. He will be deeply missed.
